Genocide: The Systematic Killing of a People presents the point of view that a young schoolgirl had attending a Catholic boarding school during the genocide. After the death of President Habyarimana and the outbreak of violence began, Mathilde Mukantabana, vividly remember the night came into her dormitory with drastic news. “They roused everyone out of bed and announced that all Tutsi students had to be out of the country before daybreak” (Altman 90) Safely making it to freedom, Mathilde states she will never be able to explain why it happened. Both Hutu and Tutsi speak the Bantu language and practice the same religion and culture.

Hotel Rwanda
Hotel Rwanda was published in 2004, providing society with a more vague insight to the atrocities that occurred in Rwanda in 1994. Paul Rusesabagina, a hotel manager, finds himself stuck in the middle of the warfare as he struggles to keep his family safe. Paul being a moderate Hutu married his wife Tatiana, a Tutsi, which created some issues as Paul tried to protect his family. When the Hutu militia arrives at his house to kill, he is able to bribe them with money and alcohol to protect his family. “Paul must divert the Hutu soldiers, care for the refugees, be a source of strength to his family, and maintain the appearance of a functioning high-class hotel, as the situation becomes more and more violent, with mobs in the streets just outside the gates” (IMBD).

Shooting Dogs
Shooting Dogs is a movie based on a true story that occurred during the Rwandan Genocide. Based out of school in Kigali, Joe Conner an English teacher and priest Father Christopher, the school’s principal get caught up in the 1994 genocide. As the school becomes a haven for Europeans and Tutsis, Joe and Father Christopher are faced with the opportunity to evacuate safely or stay with the Rwandans who are abandon. Marie, a student of the school often challenges the extent and love that Joe and Father have towards the school.

Art Exhibit
Hero's of our Time: Rwanda Courage and Survival
Hero’s of our Time: Rwanda Courage and Survival is an exhibition produced by the Survivors Fund (SURF), and organized by LSE Arts in collaboration with the Centre for the Study of Human Rights. The exhibit focuses on true heroic stories from Siméon Karamaga, Daphrose Mukangarambe, Cassien Mbanda and Ange Cendrine Mukayitesi. Giving the testimony of all these survivors, they also reveal how life is like post-genocide.
